For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NASB)
The word “fortresses” in the NASB can also be the word strongholds. This word is a military term for a “fortified place”. A stronghold can be a place of protection for us from the influence of the devil like the passage in Psalm 46 tells us that God is our stronghold. Or, a stronghold can be a place of protection for demonic activity launched against us. This is the type of stronghold we will look at in this blog. More specifically, strongholds of the mind or soul. In other words, strongholds in our thinking.
A stronghold is a place of spiritual encampment for Satan and his demons to hide and be protected. From this stronghold all sort of demonic activity is launched. These strongholds are a place for evil and sinful activity that is defended within in our sympathetic thoughts and attitudes that defend our self-life (pride). We can be oppressed by demons especially when we have thought systems that are defended by deception and false doctrines. Evil spirits are able to attack the soul of anyone knowing they are protected by the armor of one’s own thoughts and doctrines that do not line up according to the truth of the Word of God. These fortresses or strongholds exist as thought patterns and human reasoning that govern individuals, churches, communities and even nations.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and their meanings from the above passage of scripture.
The word, “speculations” is defined as; imaginations, opinions, human reasoning, rationalization, what seems good, and any thoughts that are contrary to the Word. This word can also mean, judgment or decision.
The phrase, “every lofty thing” is defined as; every human act or attitude that is raised to the level of divine truth. This actually forms an obstacle to the truth of the gospel and keeps man in bondage.
Our minds are the battlefield we must rule over. Our thinking affects the way we speak and the way we act. “Every thought” that comes to mind must forcibly become compliant to truth. As soon as we discover thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs in us that do not agree with the Word of God we must not defend them nor make excuses but, humble ourselves, repent and renew our minds on the Word of God, Romans 12:2.
Jesus said; “I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me; John 14:30 (NASB). This is our goal, that the ruler of this world has nothing in us! More to come.
