Demolishing Strongholds – III

Continuing our discussion on demolishing strongholds let’s look at 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 again. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh,  for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses (strongholds). We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ…

The type of strongholds we are discussing are the strongholds that exist as thought patterns, mindsets, beliefs and human reasoning that are contrary to the Word of God. These strongholds give legal access to demonic influence and activity in our life. These strongholds are typically built within our sympathetic thoughts and attitudes that defend our self-life (pride).

We may say that Jesus is our Lord, meaning that we follow Him and obey Him modeling our lives after His. However, in reality, we make choices and decisions based on our thoughts, mindsets and beliefs even though they may be contrary to Christ. We may say Jesus is our Lord but we are led most often by our beliefs constructed by our thoughts and mindsets. Our mindsets could be determined by our past experiences, culture, belief system, emotions, family upbringing, etc.

Too often we have constructed our beliefs on our experiences even though our experiences may not be in accordance to the Word of God. For instance; if I have not experienced supernatural healing nor know of anyone that has been healed supernaturally I may come to the conclusion that healing is not for today or that healing isn’t for everyone. Both of these conclusions are not in accordance with the truth of the Word of God but could become a stronghold that keeps me from receiving healing. So, am I being led by the Lord and His Word or my past experience?

We also may have a stronghold in our mind that is really based on our emotions or how we feel. I may be feeling hopeless about a situation in my life and therefore conclude there is no hope. This is not true for there is always hope in the Lord. My feelings could seem so real, so true, I could be convinced that what I am feeling is truth and this stronghold would keep me from receiving hope. So, am I being led by the Lord and His Word or is my emotions really leading me?

False doctrines and teaching can erect strongholds in our minds. Legalism is a major stronghold that Satan convinces many of God’s people with and it blinds us to the truth. Legalism is so blinding that when Jesus was standing right in front of the Pharisees they could not recognize Him. The way we think determines the way we believe and therefore how we act. This is why we are told in Romans 12 not to be conformed to the world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. We renew our minds on the truth, the Word of God, so that we can live by the Word. Jesus said that man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God, Matthew 4:4.  The way we think determines the way we act. Look at what it says in 1 Peter 1:22 that happens to us as we obey the truth. Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart…

Our souls (mind, will and emotions) are purified and we can gauge this purification process by our love for one another. Every thought, every human reasoning, every speculation or lofty thing must be forcefully taken captive and measured by the Word of God which is the standard for truth for all people in all places at all times. Jesus said you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free!

Let’s demolish every stronghold in our mind that is preventing us from receiving and walking in all that God has given to us!
