Just prior to Moses leading the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt, God instructed him to have the people sacrifice a lamb and put the blood over the door to their house and on both sides. This appeared in the shape of a cross. Death and destruction was coming that night and everyone that had the blood on the door to their house would be passed over, see Exodus 12. In verse 11, God called this Passover. Passover means to be exempt. This was a sign, an example, that many years later Jesus the Messiah would come and fulfill this observance by His crucifixion, death and resurrection.
Jesus was beaten severely, nailed to a cross, died and was buried in a tomb. On the third day God the Father caused Him to rise from the dead. The resurrection validated everything Jesus said, the claims He made about Himself and everything He did. Because of the blood of Jesus that was spilled on the cross, everyone who receives Jesus Christ would be exempt from death and destruction, they will be “passed over”.
1 Corinthians 15:12-19, Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.
This next passage of scripture tells us what Jesus took upon Himself, nailed to the cross and buried in death all for our benefit in this life here and now.
Isaiah 53:4-6 – Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
Look closely at the definition of the highlighted words:
- Griefs – sickness, disease, sufferings, anxieties
- Sorrows – anguish, pain
- Transgressions – rebelliousness, disobedience, guilt
- Iniquities – blame, punishment, evil, perversity, all of our offense against the law of God
- Well-being – wholeness, completeness, peace – shalom
Now read it this way:
Isaiah 53:4-6 – Surely our sickness, disease, sufferings and anxieties He Himself bore, And our anguish and pain He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our rebelliousness, disobedience and guilt, He was crushed for our punishment, blame, perversity and evil; The punishment for our wholeness, completeness and peace fell upon Him, And by His wounds we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused all of our offense against the law of God to fall on Him.
Wow! Amazing! He did all this just for us!
John 3:16-17, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes (puts trust in, rely upon) in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge (condemn) the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
God loves us, cares for us and has great affection towards us. There is nothing we can do to work for or earn His love or salvation. Jesus is Lord of all lords and the Messiah of the world. There is no other name by which man shall be saved and inherit eternal life.
This is much more than a truth to be acknowledged. It is a free gift to be received. Receiving this free gift causes each of us to be resurrected to new life.
May you have a blessed Passover / Easter celebration!
